US Officially Approves $4 Billion Loan Guarantee for Poland’s Military Modernization

The United States has officially approved a new $4 billion defense loan guarantee for Poland, aimed at helping the country modernize its armed forces. The loan will be used to purchase American-made weapons.

With this latest guarantee, the total value of U.S. defense loans and guarantees to Poland now exceeds $15 billion, as Warsaw prepares to allocate 5% of its GDP to defense by 2026. In 2025 alone, Poland is already spending 4.7% of its GDP on defense—the highest percentage among NATO members.

This move is intended to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank amid escalating security concerns in Europe. Under the new credit arrangement, Poland plans to acquire advanced defense systems, including Patriot missile systems, HIMARS artillery, Apache helicopters, and F-35 fighter jets—equipment already being heavily funded through American programs.

In addition, Poland is negotiating the use of European Union funds—specifically €6 billion from the EU recovery fund—for defense purposes within its National Recovery Plan. These funds would support defense industry modernization, cybersecurity, and security infrastructure.

According to Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the U.S. loan guarantee is a new confirmation of the strategic partnership between Warsaw and Washington and a key element of regional security.

Poland is also continuing to implement its “East Shield” program—a $2.5 billion project to fortify its eastern border—and is developing a nationwide reservist training system with the goal of establishing a security force of up to 500,000 people.

The new U.S. loan is part of Poland’s long-term strategy to bolster its defense capabilities in the face of Russian aggression.
