Polish prime minister Donald Tusk confirmed on Wednesday that a “huge number” of Russian drones entered Poland’s airspace during overnight strikes on Ukraine. Those posing a direct threat were shot down.
Military Response
According to the Polish Armed Forces, the airspace was “repeatedly violated by drones” during Russia’s attack on Ukraine. At the request of the Operational Commander, weapons were used and search operations for downed targets are under way.
Polish and NATO military aircraft were mobilised, while ground-based air defence and radar systems were put on the highest state of readiness. Police later reported finding a damaged drone in the village of Czosnówka and debris in the town of Cześniki.
Tusk described the incidents as a “large-scale provocation” and confirmed that the drones originated from Russia. He said he was in constant contact with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Polish aircraft had engaged hostile objects.
European Solidarity
The overnight violations sparked strong reactions across Europe.
- France: President Emmanuel Macron called the attack “simply unacceptable” and urged Russia to stop its “reckless escalation,” pledging full solidarity with Poland.
- Netherlands: Prime Minister Dick Schoof described the incident as proof that Russia’s war poses a threat to Europe, noting that Dutch F-35s supported Polish defence.
- Ireland: Deputy PM Micheál Martin condemned it as a “reckless and unprecedented act.”
- Finland: Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said Poland had to resort to “exceptional measures” and offered full support.
- European Council: President António Costa stressed that “the security of one is the security of all,” warning that Russian aggression endangers critical infrastructure across the continent.
What Comes Next
An emergency meeting of the Polish Council of Ministers was convened on Wednesday morning. European leaders reiterated that Poland’s sovereignty must be defended and that strengthening Europe’s defence is now imperative.
