Italy strenghthens Naval logistics

The Italian Navy has taken delivery of Atlante, its second logistic support ship (LSS), during a ceremony held at Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, marking another step forward in the service’s fleet renewal program managed under the aegis of Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).

The LSSs, built as part of the navy’s fleet renewal plan, entrusted to the Temporary Business Grouping (RTI) formed by Fincantieri and Leonardo, are characterized by a high level of innovation.  In addition to military functions, they can be employed in complementary activities such as supporting civil protection, humanitarian aid, and rescue operations.

Furthermore, the adoption of low-emission generation and propulsion systems, together with advanced technologies for the control of biological effluents, ensures a reduced environmental impact.

According to Fincantieri, Atlante, together with the ship Vulcano delivered in 2021, will strengthen the national fleet’s capabilities, ensuring operational readiness in multiple sectors: from the defense of the country’s vital interests and Euro-Atlantic spaces, to contributing to international peace and security.

Logistic Support Ships such as Atlante can be deployed for a variety of tasks beyond military roles, including supporting civil protection, humanitarian missions, and rescue work.

The design features low-emission power and propulsion systems as well as advanced control technology for biological effluents, which aims to limit environmental impact.

Atlante has a displacement of roughly 27,000 tonnes, measures 193 metres in length, and can reach speeds of up to 20 knots.

The ship can accommodate up to 235 people, consisting of crew members and specialists. It is equipped with medical facilities and can transfer both liquid and solid cargo to other vessels.

It also supports repair and maintenance activities at sea, helicopter operations, and the recovery of vehicles or materials from both the surface and seabed. In addition, Atlante is designed to facilitate intelligence gathering and electronic warfare functions.

The Castellammare di Stabia site, which is Fincantieri’s oldest shipyard, employs 605 people directly and supports more than 3,200 jobs through its supply network.
