Europe prepares military mission in Ukraine to guarantee peace

European countries, led by the UK and France, are actively preparing to deploy a military mission to Ukraine if a ceasefire agreement is reached with Russia. This became known following the summit of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris, where leaders from more than 30 countries discussed long-term security guarantees for Kyiv.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, signed a declaration of intent. The document provides for the creation of “military hubs” throughout Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities. These hubs will include secure facilities for storing weapons and military equipment, as well as the deployment of British and French troops to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

“After the ceasefire, the UK and France will establish military hubs throughout Ukraine to ensure the deployment of forces and the construction of secure facilities for weapons and equipment in support of Ukraine’s defense needs,” Starmer said at a press conference.

Macron emphasized that the mission would be “reassuring” in nature and would not involve direct participation in combat operations. It is aimed at deterring possible future aggression by Russia. The coalition also plans to continue supplying weapons, intelligence, and long-term assistance in rebuilding the Ukrainian army.

The summit was attended by representatives of the United States, including emissaries of President Donald Trump. The American side expressed support for the concept, promising to lead the mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire using technical means, although the direct deployment of American troops in Ukraine is out of the question.

Other European countries, such as Germany, have expressed their willingness to provide political and military support, but are cautious about sending their contingents directly to Ukrainian territory. Italy and Poland have so far stated that they do not plan to participate in the deployment of troops.

Experts note that such a mission would be a significant step for European security, especially against the backdrop of peace talks, where Ukraine insists on reliable guarantees. However, Russia has repeatedly stated that the presence of NATO or European forces on Ukrainian soil is unacceptable.

Plans are still being worked out, and how they’re put into action will depend on the outcome of the peace talks. The coalition says the goal is to make sure there’s lasting peace and to stop new conflicts in Europe.
