Lithuania handed a note of protest to a representative of the Russian Embassy

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Russian Embassy and handed him an official note of strong protest. The diplomatic démarche was a reaction to the massive attack by Russian troops on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on the night of 20 January.

According to a statement by the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, the note emphasises that such actions by Russia cause serious harm to the civilian population, destroy critical infrastructure and grossly violate international humanitarian law. The ministry directly qualifies these strikes as war crimes.

‘Unjustified and targeted attacks on energy facilities, causing suffering to civilians in winter, are unacceptable and must be strongly condemned,’ the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.
