Brussels is urging Washington to strictly adhere to the obligations under a trade agreement reached last year, insisting that its key provisions be approved before the July deadline, Bloomberg reports.
Against the backdrop of new tariff threats from the Donald Trump administration, the European Union is pushing for unconditional compliance with the core elements of the deal. The agreement was reached in July 2025 during negotiations between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump.
The document stipulated a 15% tariff cap for most categories of European exports to the United States. The agreement was intended to reduce the risk of trade escalation between the world’s two largest economic partners.
However, tensions in transatlantic trade relations have risen following Trump’s recent statement about a possible increase in duties on European cars and trucks to 25%. The US president accused the EU of failing to comply with the terms of the agreement but provided no specific details regarding his grievances.
Brussels is emphasizing the importance of honoring the commitments reached and hopes to avoid a new round of a trade war that could cause serious damage to the economies of both sides.
