Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has reported the discovery of a large quantity of destroyed documents and campaign materials belonging to the ruling Fidesz party in one of the Hungarian government’s offices.
According to the prime minister, workers found no fewer than 15–20 bags of shredded papers in the basement of the former Ministry of Transport building. In addition, postcards, flags, and posters bearing Fidesz campaign slogans were also stored there.
“This may point to potentially serious violations, including illegal political financing,” Péter Magyar stated.
The prime minister stressed that a thorough investigation is needed to determine whether government premises, resources, and staff were used to produce and store party campaign materials. He called on law enforcement agencies and the State Audit Office to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
“The circumstances must be fully established. The investigation will also determine who made the decision to store — or possibly produce — party materials on government premises,” Magyar added.
No official comment from the Fidesz party has been received so far. The investigation is ongoing.
