Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) has filed formal charges against General Vlad Gheorghește, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
DNA confirmed that the directorate’s military department has opened a criminal investigation and formally charged General Gheorghește.
According to case materials, in July 2025, General Vlad Gheorghește assisted another high-ranking military official in signing an official request to the Romanian Ministry of Education. The request proposed creating 20 additional state-funded positions at the National University of Physical Education and Sport.
According to prosecutors, the purpose was to subsequently employ these pre-qualified specialists within the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
Currently, the details of the charges and any potential preventive measures have not been disclosed. General Gheorghește has not yet commented on the charges against him.
Vlad Gheorghește has served as Chief of the Romanian General Staff since 2024. An investigation into such a high-ranking military official could have serious consequences for both the Romanian army and the country’s image within NATO.
