Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has stated that he plans to step down from his post in three or four months’ time, or “perhaps even sooner”.
“I’ve started packing up my books at the Presidential Administration. I have a lot of books, and I’m trying to work out where to put them,” said Vučić.
He explained that he was considering standing as a candidate for the post of prime minister, adding that he had an important meeting scheduled for that evening.
Vucic also stated that “the elections will take place in a few months’ time; whether in three or four months is a technical matter”.
He also added that he ponders daily which of the current officials in power could become a new presidential candidate.
It was previously reported that Vučić plans to hold snap parliamentary elections by the end of this year.
Since December 2024, Serbia has been gripped by anti-government protests, notably calling for Vučić’s resignation. This followed the deaths of 16 people when a canopy collapsed at the railway station in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad.
