Italian PM Meloni to propose EU Special envoy for Ukraine peace talks

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans to propose the appointment of an EU special envoy to lead negotiations regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The initiative is expected to be formally presented during the upcoming European Union summit in Brussels.

Speaking at a press conference following the G7 summit, Meloni argued that the role should be filled by a representative from a “medium-sized” EU member state rather than one of the bloc’s largest powers.

She emphasized that the European Union must have a unified voice in potential peace talks to prevent diplomatic marginalization and ensure Europe is not sidelined in the resolution process.

Regarding international cooperation, Meloni noted that G7 leaders reached a shared understanding with U.S.

Meloni’s proposal highlights Italy’s desire for a more structured and proactive diplomatic role for the EU in addressing the conflict, ensuring that the bloc remains a key player in future peace negotiations.
