A joint operation by Spanish and Dutch police resulted in the seizure of 947 kilograms of MDMA (also known as ecstasy). This is the largest shipment of this psychoactive substance ever confiscated in Europe.
According to Spanish authorities, the drug was destined for South America. The traffickers planned to exchange the MDMA for cocaine, which would then be returned to Europe. An investigation, launched in early 2025, revealed that the suspects coordinated shipments through Spain and the Netherlands to Africa, and from there to Latin America.
The operation included searches at 11 locations in Spain and one in the Netherlands. Fifteen suspects were detained. The MDMA was seized in powder form and other forms ready for transportation. “This is a historic operation demonstrating effective international cooperation in the fight against transnational drug crime,” the Spanish Ministry of the Interior noted.
The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
