Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced that an investigation has been launched in the country against former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. The reason is suspicions of his possible cooperation with Russia and the transfer of confidential information to Moscow.
Magyar made the statement during a government press conference.
“The investigation has begun. The case involves numerous classified documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other agencies,” the Prime Minister said, refusing to disclose details due to the confidentiality of the materials.
Earlier, during the election campaign, Magyar repeatedly accused Szijjártó of “colluding with the Russians” and qualified such actions as high treason, which under Hungarian law is punishable by up to life imprisonment.
The statements are based on journalistic investigations that published audio recordings and transcripts of conversations between Szijjártó and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. According to media reports, they discussed issues such as weakening EU sanctions against Russia, coordinating Hungary’s positions, and exchanging information.
