France scrambles to respond to cyberattack exposing data of 700,000 taxpayers

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has convened an interministerial crisis unit to address the large-scale cyberattack targeting the tax administration, which he will chair via “secure videoconference,” Matignon announced on Sunday.

This meeting of officials from the relevant ministries will aim, among other things, to prepare for the notification of the 678,000 individuals and businesses whose data was accessed—a process set to begin on Monday, officials said.

Several political leaders have expressed concern over this cyberattack. On Sunday, Socialist senators called for a parliamentary inquiry, noting a series of incidents that do not allow one “at this stage to conclude that there is a structural failure” but do warrant an investigation into the existence of “common vulnerabilities.”

Bruno Retailleau, a presidential candidate for the right-wing party Les Républicains, expressed regret on X that France is “the second-most-affected country in the world by cyberattacks.”
