Poland’s position on nuclear sharing within NATO

Poland seeks to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence arrangements; however, this does not envisage the physical deployment of nuclear warheads on Polish territory.

Previously, Poland had expressed scepticism towards the deployment of nuclear weapons while simultaneously holding preliminary talks with the United States on strengthening the US nuclear deterrence posture in Europe and participating in a related French initiative.

At the same time, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has not ruled out the possibility of Poland developing its own nuclear programme in the future.

The statements come amid warnings from Western officials and US intelligence assessments that Russia could potentially launch an attack against a NATO member state before the end of the current decade, or even sooner.
