Polish police have received information about the possible preparation of an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Official representatives of the security agencies announced this on Sunday.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Minister-Coordinator of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak ordered the necessary measures to be taken. In connection with the information received, an emergency meeting was convened at 11:00 a.m. Warsaw time at the Counter-Terrorism Centre of the Internal Security Agency (ABW). Representatives of the police, the State Protection Service (SOP) and the ABW are taking part.
The information was confirmed by Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Gałecka and special services coordinator spokesperson Jacek Dobrzyński. Details about the nature of the threat, possible suspects or specific attack plans have not been disclosed at this stage — the authorities limited themselves to stating that the signal is being checked and that the services are coordinating their actions.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of heightened readiness of Polish security forces. Last week the country saw a series of attacks in schools (including one with a fatal outcome), after which the authorities strengthened security measures. Earlier, in September, Tusk warned of an intensification of hybrid threats on NATO’s eastern flank.
