Latvian Prime Minister calls on EU residents to give up one beer a year to help Ukraine

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated that to increase financial support for Ukraine, it would be enough for every resident of the European Union to donate an amount equivalent to the cost of one beer per year. He made the remarks to journalists upon arrival at the EU summit in Brussels.

Kulbergs stressed the need to continue aid to Kyiv amid the approaching winter, which he described as “decisive” for Ukraine. According to him, Russian attacks on energy infrastructure are making the situation particularly difficult.

“Supporting Ukraine is a matter of money. It’s one beer a year or even less for one European. We can afford it. Ukraine needs this money now,” the Latvian prime minister said. He added: “This one beer is just an expense. But there it is the price of life. If we drink less, lives will be saved there. It’s that simple.”

Kulbergs also called on Europeans to “think less about their own comfort” and noted that a strong Ukraine means a strong Europe, while its weakening would create “huge problems” for the entire continent. At the same time, he advocated for tougher sanctions against Russia and more effective blocking of channels supplying Western components for Russian weapons.
