A powerful explosion occurred at a facility belonging to MOL, Hungary’s largest oil and gas company, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
According to the Prime Minister, one person was killed and several others were seriously injured in the incident. The exact number of victims and the severity of their injuries are currently being determined.
Hungarian Energy Minister István Kapitány and MOL CEO Zsolt Gernádi immediately arrived at the scene and are en route to Tiszaújváros, where the refinery is located.
MOL has not yet officially commented on the cause of the explosion. Rescue services and cleanup crews are working at the scene.
MOL is Hungary’s largest multinational oil and gas company and a leading player in the oil refining industry in Central and Eastern Europe. The refinery in Tiszaújváros is one of the company’s key production facilities.
