EU ambassadors have approved the United Kingdom’s participation in a major European financial assistance programme for Ukraine. The initiative concerns a €90 billion loan known as the Ukraine Support Loan, intended in part to address the country’s defence requirements. The development was announced by the press service of the Council of the European Union.
According to the agreement, the UK will contribute a fair share of the programme. This will enable Ukraine to access a broader range of defence suppliers, including British manufacturers, thereby enhancing Kyiv’s capacity to meet its defence needs.
The Ukraine Support Loan was formally adopted by the EU Council in April 2026. The facility is designed to support Ukraine’s urgent budgetary and defence needs over the 2026–2027 period. The involvement of the United Kingdom marks a significant step towards closer cooperation between London and Brussels in backing Ukraine.
“This reflects our shared commitment to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes and underscores the importance of close cooperation in strengthening European security,” the joint statement by the United Kingdom and the European Union states.
The ambassadors’ decision constitutes a formal procedural step that opens the door to the practical implementation of UK participation. It is anticipated that the move will help accelerate the delivery of military equipment and other forms of assistance through the European programme’s mechanisms.
