The French and German defense ministries simultaneously announced the launch of Operation Bouclier Nord (Nord Shield) — the deployment of a joint military contingent in Greenland.
According to official data:
France will send about 850 military personnel (mainly from special forces and mountain troops), as well as air force and engineering units.
Germany will allocate about 1,200 personnel, including Bundeswehr units specializing in operations in Arctic conditions, and a significant amount of equipment.
The officially stated goal of the mission is:
“To strengthen NATO’s Arctic flank, ensure the security of critical infrastructure, and counter growing military activity in the region.”
Both countries emphasize that the operation is being conducted at the invitation of the Danish government and the Greenlandic authorities. The first units are expected to arrive at Thule Air Base and the Kakoortok area within the next 10–14 days.
