Homes of ruling party members firebombed in Greece

Overnight on July 1, unidentified individuals carried out a series of firebomb attacks on the homes of members of the ruling New Democracy party in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. Five people were injured, including a parliamentary candidate.

The attacks took place between 4:00 and 4:45 a.m. Assailants threw homemade incendiary devices—reportedly based on gas canisters—at three apartment buildings housing politicians and supporters of the ruling party. Fires broke out as a result, destroying cars and motorcycles parked near the buildings.

Among the injured are a New Democracy candidate and her mother, both of whom suffered burns. One of the injured is in serious condition. Police are classifying the incidents as a terrorist attack.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has visited the victims in the hospital and condemned the attacks. Party representatives stated that the attacks were intended to intimidate political opponents and destabilize the situation in the country.

No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. Police are investigating and pursuing leads regarding the possible involvement of radical left-wing or anarchist groups known for carrying out similar actions in Greece.

Authorities have stepped up security measures around New Democracy politicians. The investigation is ongoing.
