Interpol has elected a new president

During the 93rd General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) in Marrakesh, Morocco, a new president of the organisation was elected. He is French police officer Lucas Philippot, Inspector General of the French National Police. The election for a four-year term took place today and marked a change in leadership in the global structure responsible for international police cooperation.

The Interpol General Assembly, attended by representatives from 196 member countries, was held in the southern Moroccan capital from 25 to 27 November. This event highlights the growing role of the African continent in global security, and Morocco was chosen as the host due to its reputation as a reliable partner in the fight against transnational crime.

Lucas Philipp, advisor on European and international affairs to the French National Police, won the necessary majority of votes in the first round of voting. He will replace Ahmed Nasser Al-Raisi of the UAE, whose four-year term expires in November 2025. Al-Raisi, elected in 2021 at the assembly in Istanbul, actively promoted initiatives to combat cybercrime and terrorism, but his term has come to a logical conclusion.

Philippe’s election comes amid growing challenges such as cyber threats, migration crises and cross-border terrorism. Under his leadership, Interpol is likely to increase its focus on technological innovation, including the use of AI for data analysis and rapid information sharing between countries.

Under its new leadership, Interpol continues to be a key tool in the international community’s arsenal, promoting peace and stability in a world where crime knows no borders.
