Italy plans to radically expand its army by 60% by 2044

The Italian Ministry of Defense is considering a radical plan to build up its armed forces, specifically increasing the number of personnel by more than 60% by 2044.

According to a document prepared by a group of military experts and presented to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, the combined strength of the army, navy, and air force is expected to increase from the current 170,000 to 275,000, including a 15,000-strong reserve force. The plan calls for the gradual recruitment of approximately 100,000 additional troops over 18 years at an estimated cost of €6 billion.

The reform, which is expected to be formalized into a bill by the end of March, includes strengthening the Carabinieri, opening the service to foreigners, and creating a stable reserve force. Personnel costs will almost double, from €8.8 billion to approximately €15 billion per year.

Meloni’s government emphasizes the need to adapt to new threats in Europe and the Mediterranean, but the plan is controversial: the opposition and part of the coalition fear damage to social spending, healthcare, and education. The final decision rests with Parliament.
