King Charles III urges US Congress to strengthen support for Ukraine

King Charles III, in a historic address to a joint session of the US Congress, called on American lawmakers to demonstrate “unwavering resolve” in supporting Ukraine and its “bravest people.”

In his speech, the monarch emphasized the shared responsibility of the United Kingdom and the United States for global security and the need to strengthen transatlantic unity in the face of global challenges. Charles III reminded members of Congress of key moments in the two countries’ shared history — from participation in two World Wars to their joint response following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“Today, Mr. Speaker, that same unwavering resolve is needed to defend Ukraine and its bravest people — to secure a truly just and lasting peace,” the King declared, drawing applause from the chamber.

Charles III’s address was only the second time in history that a reigning British monarch has spoken before the US Congress (the first was his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1991). The speech was devoted to the “special and enduring” relationship between London and Washington, as well as the importance of NATO to collective security.

The King particularly noted that in the current “more unstable and dangerous” era, the actions of the United States are of decisive importance, and urged America not to abandon its leadership role on the world stage. His words on supporting Ukraine and strengthening NATO were received as a significant signal amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

Charles III’s speech was met with repeated standing ovations from both Democrats and Republicans. The address took place as part of the King’s state visit to the United States, timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence.
