More than 50 searches conducted in Moldova in connection with the case of preparing mass riots

The Prosecutor General’s Office and the Information and Security Service of Moldova conducted a large-scale operation: more than 50 searches were carried out in various regions of the country in connection with a criminal case involving the preparation of mass riots and an attempt to seize power by force.

According to the investigation, a group of individuals linked to fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor and the Shor Party, which is banned in Moldova, planned to organize protests that would escalate into violent actions, including blocking government buildings and clashes with the police. During the searches, computers, mobile phones, large amounts of cash in various currencies, as well as documents and materials confirming the coordination of actions from abroad were seized.

Prosecutors claim that some of those detained underwent training in camps outside Moldova and received funding to organize unrest. The total amount of funds identified, allegedly intended to bribe protesters, exceeds several million lei.

At present, more than 20 people have been detained, and several more have been declared wanted. All of them face up to 10 years in prison on charges of “preparing for mass riots” and “attempting to seize power by force.”

President Maia Sandu called the operation “an important step in protecting democracy and the constitutional order.” “We will not allow those who have fled justice to destabilize the country with Russian money,” she said in her address.

The investigation is ongoing. Formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days.
