The Polish government has announced the launch of an official investigation into possible links between American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Russian intelligence services. This was announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 3 February.
According to Tusk, in recent days, there have been increasing suggestions in the global press and expert circles that the unprecedented scandal involving paedophilia and trafficking of minors linked to Epstein could have been organised or used by Russian special services as a honey trap to gather compromising information on influential Western figures.
‘More and more clues, more information and more and more comments in the global press point to the suspicion that this unprecedented paedophile scandal was co-organised by the Russian special services,’ Tusk said.
The prime minister stressed that such a version, if confirmed, poses a serious threat to Poland’s national security, as it could mean the existence of compromising material on politicians, businessmen and other influential figures, including, possibly, Polish citizens.
The government is setting up a special task force to conduct the investigation. Its tasks are:
to study the documents in the Epstein case recently declassified by the US Department of Justice;
to investigate possible ‘Polish connections’ — Epstein’s contacts with Polish models and citizens;
assess the likelihood of the involvement of Russian special services (KGB/FSB/GRU) in the organisation or exploitation of Epstein’s network;
determine whether Polish women or girls were victims of the crimes.
Tusk noted that Poland is ready to initiate an international investigation if there are sufficient grounds.
