Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that Russia may be preparing a false flag attack on its own territory. According to the minister, the aim of such an operation would be to create a pretext for legitimising further military aggression against European countries.
Minister Sikorski drew a historical parallel with the Gleiwitz incident in August 1939, when German Abwehr forces staged a fake Polish attack on a radio station in Gleiwitz.
That provocation was subsequently used by the Third Reich as a justification for the invasion of Poland and the outbreak of the Second World War.
The Polish minister’s remarks were made in direct response to recent threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin warned that Russia would strike European countries if drone launches targeting Russian territory are detected as originating from their soil.
