The Romanian government is facing a serious political crisis after the largest party in the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Party, withdrew support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and demanded his resignation. Bloomberg reports this development.
According to media reports, the party itself does not insist on an immediate breakup of the coalition and wants to maintain the ruling alliance, but with a different prime minister. This creates the risk of prolonged negotiations among the participants in the four-party pro-European bloc.
The conflict heightens the threat of the coalition’s collapse, which came to power about 10 months ago amid the country’s deepest political crisis in over 30 years. The alliance was formed at that time to prevent the rise of ultranationalist forces following canceled and repeated elections.
Against this backdrop, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has urged coalition parties to maintain governance of the country and attempt to resolve their differences. However, analysts warn that political instability could complicate budgetary reforms, access to EU funds, and put pressure on the country’s credit rating.
