Reform UK leader under investigation over large donation made before his election to Parliament

The UK Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards has launched an investigation into Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The investigation was prompted by his receipt of a large financial gift amounting to around £5 million shortly before his election to the House of Commons.

According to Sky News, the funds were transferred to the politician by British crypto-billionaire Christopher Garborn, who currently resides in Thailand. The transfer was made in early 2024 — even before Farage officially announced his candidacy in the general election.

In July 2024, Farage secured a convincing victory in the Clacton constituency in the general election and became a Member of Parliament.

The details of the investigation are currently being clarified. In particular, the exact nature of the funds received and Farage’s compliance with the rules on declaring gifts and donations are being established. Under parliamentary rules, MPs are required to fully disclose information about significant financial receipts, particularly those received during the election campaign.

Neither Nigel Farage himself nor his Reform UK party has yet made any official comments regarding the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
