Romanian President nominates Adrian Veștea as Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicușor Dan on Sunday nominated Adrian Veștea, a member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), as prime minister, following the withdrawal of independent candidate Eugen Tomac.

Veștea, 52, currently serves as president of the Brașov County Council. He previously held posts as mayor of Râșnov and as minister of development, public works and administration from 2023 to 2024.

Tomac had sought to lead a technocratic government but failed to secure parliamentary backing. Announcing the new nomination, President Dan said “a political government solution is the right one” and described Veștea as a pro-European politician with experience at all administrative levels, including budget management.

Veștea now has 10 days to form a cabinet and win a parliamentary vote of confidence. The move comes amid a political crisis that has stalled policymaking, put EU funding at risk, and contributed to record lows for the leu.

Parliamentary parties have indicated that a minority political government is preferable to a technocratic one. Romania’s next parliamentary election is scheduled for 2028, and analysts say the likelihood of an early election remains low.
