Russia and Slovakia to hold talks in Moscow for the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine

The Russian-Slovak intergovernmental commission on economic and scientific-technical cooperation will hold a meeting in Moscow on October 26, 2026. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia. It will be the first meeting of the commission since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

According to a statement from the Slovak Foreign Ministry, the parties intend to discuss energy issues, including the nuclear sector, as well as cooperation in agriculture, the environment, sports, and culture. The Slovak side, in particular, is interested in discussing gas supplies and the continuation of oil supplies.

The previous meeting of the commission took place in November 2021 in Bratislava. The resumption of its work comes amid repeated visits by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to Moscow and his position on energy supplies from Russia, which differs from the general line of most EU countries. Slovakia continues to purchase Russian oil and gas, although under EU plans it is supposed to stop buying Russian gas by the end of 2027.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov and Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár.
