Russian drone enters Romania during overnight attack and crashes near Ukrainian border

Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported  that a military radar system detected a group of aerial targets near the border with Ukraine, north of Tulcea County, at 2:23 a.m. Two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Force were scrambled to monitor the situation, along with an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter of the Romanian Air Force.

The drone later entered Romania’s national airspace 13 kilometers east of the city of Galați. At 3:24 a.m., it crashed and caught fire in an uninhabited area 4 kilometers northeast of the village of Grindu in Tulcea County.

A group of service members was sent to the scene. Officials have not reported any casualties or material damage so far.

In addition, overnight on August 20, Poland scrambled its military aircraft in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but did not record any violations of its airspace.
