Slovakia opens treason Investigation against Prime Minister Fico

Slovak police have initiated a criminal investigation against sitting Prime Minister Robert Fico. The announcement was made by Branislav Gröhling, leader of the opposition party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS).

According to Gröhling, he filed a police complaint a month ago accusing Fico of high treason, abuse of power, dereliction of duty, and other serious crimes. His party colleagues and more than 13,000 citizens joined the complaint, making it, in Gröhling’s words, “the largest criminal complaint in history” of Slovakia.

The criminal case was transferred from the Prosecutor General’s Office to the Bratislava Regional Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently passed on to the police. Gröhling expressed satisfaction that law enforcement is not suppressing the case and has begun taking active steps.

One of the key grounds for the investigation is the Fico government’s decision to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. The opposition believes that such actions constitute evidence of abuse of office and high treason.

As of now, no official comment has been received from Robert Fico himself or his government regarding the opening of the investigation. The Prime Minister has previously stated his position on assistance to Ukraine on multiple occasions, speaking out against military support for Kyiv.

The investigation is ongoing. Should the suspicions be confirmed, Fico could face serious legal consequences, including possible removal from office.
