UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he is “fed up” with sharp fluctuations in energy prices for British households and businesses, blaming the actions of US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Speaking in an interview with ITV News during a visit to the Middle East, Starmer directly linked the volatility in energy tariffs to global developments in which, he said, both leaders are involved.
“I am fed up with families across the country seeing their energy bills go up and down, businesses’ energy bills go up and down — because of the actions of Putin or Trump around the world,” Starmer said.
The Prime Minister noted that the UK is forced to “put up with” its dependence on the international energy market, and stressed the need for greater energy independence, including through the development of the country’s own renewable sources.
The statement came against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the fallout from the conflict involving Iran, which has driven up oil prices and disrupted supplies. Starmer has previously criticised global developments affecting the cost of living for Britons on multiple occasions, and has called for stronger energy security for the UK.
