UN reports new civilian casualties in Ukraine

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) has published its latest report on the protection of civilians. According to the document, at least 188 civilians were killed in February 2026 as a result of hostilities, with a further 757 people wounded.

The total number of casualties (945 people) was roughly in line with January 2026, but 31% higher than in February 2025 (130 killed and 592 wounded), and 83% higher than in February 2024.

The largest share of casualties (approximately 36%) resulted from long-range weapon strikes — missiles and drones — primarily targeting cities and populated areas far from the front line. In frontline areas, the leading cause of death and injury remains attacks by short-range drones.

From the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022 through the end of February 2026, the UN Mission has verified:

at least 15,172 civilian deaths;

more than 41,378 injuries.

These figures include at least 766 children killed and 2,540 children wounded. The actual death toll is, according to the UN, significantly higher, as not all cases can be confirmed — particularly in occupied territories and areas of intense fighting.

In 2025, which the UN described as the deadliest year for civilians since 2022, at least 2,526 people were killed and 12,162 wounded — a 31% increase compared to 2024.

The Mission emphasizes that the overwhelming majority of confirmed casualties (approximately 99%) occurred in territory under Ukrainian government control.
