Germany to Smooth Military Procurement in Massive Spending Push

On Wednesday, the government is set to approve a new medium-term financial plan. According to the plan, the defense budget will more than double — reaching €162 billion over the next four years.

Key procurements include:

  • 20 Eurofighter jets — a contract worth approximately €3 billion.
  • Up to 5,000 Boxer armored personnel carriers in various configurations — to be supplied by German manufacturers KNDS and Rheinmetall.
  • At least 3,500 Patria armored vehicles — from the Finnish company Patria Oyj.
  • Several hundred Leopard 2 tanks — also from KNDS and Rheinmetall.

In addition, the Ministry of Defense is developing a drone strategy that envisions orders worth billions of euros from companies including Helsing and Quantum Systems.

Another area of focus is the modernization of satellite infrastructure: Germany plans to invest over €15 billion to reduce dependence on American military communication systems.

The German government is also aiming to strengthen cooperation with European defense companies — as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on the United States and increase Europe’s strategic autonomy.
