Trump is unpopular in Europe even among supporters of right-wing populists

US President Donald Trump remains extremely unpopular in Europe, with negative attitudes toward him persisting even among supporters of right-wing populist parties, whom he considers his natural allies. This is the conclusion of a new POLITICO Poll conducted in partnership with Public First in December 2025.

The survey covered more than 10,500 respondents in five countries: the US, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany (at least 2,000 people in each European country). The results show that Trump evokes predominantly negative emotions among Europeans, despite his efforts to support “patriotic” right-wing forces in Europe, as mentioned in the new US national security strategy.

In the UK, Trump enjoys the strongest support among supporters of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, with 50% of them viewing him positively.

In France, only about 30% of voters for Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and Jordan Bardella view Trump positively, while 38% actively dislike him.

In Germany, only a third of supporters of Alternative for Germany (AfD) have a positive opinion of him.

The overall level of negative attitudes toward Trump in Europe is high: 65.8% in Germany and 55.2% in the UK. Many respondents, including right-wing populists, criticize Trump’s tariffs on European goods. For example, 60% of supporters of the National Rally in France consider these tariffs harmful to the country’s economy.

Experts note that European right-wing populists share Trump’s “country first” principle, but fear that his policies put US interests above European ones. Leaders of parties such as Bardella have already publicly rejected the idea of ‘vassal’ dependence on “big brother Trump.”

The survey was conducted online from December 5 to 9, 2025. The margin of error is ±2 percentage points for each country.

This survey confirms a trend observed in other studies conducted in 2025 (Pew Research, YouGov, ECFR): Trump’s popularity in Western Europe remains low, even among right-wing voters, due to trade wars, his position on Ukraine, and the general perception of him as a threat to European interests.
