UK-France deal on illegal Channel crossings on the brink of collapse

Negotiations between the UK and France over renewing a key agreement to tackle illegal migration across the English Channel have reached an impasse. The current deal expires tonight, and experts fear a sharp spike in crossing attempts in the coming days.

Under the existing agreement, the UK funds a significant portion of French coastal patrols and operations to prevent migrant boats from setting off. London contributes hundreds of millions of pounds annually — the previous three-year deal was valued at approximately £480 million. In return, France steps up controls on beaches and in coastal waters.

However, a new agreement that has been under discussion for several months has yet to be signed. The main sticking point is demands from the British side, particularly Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, to significantly increase the number of boat interceptions directly off the French coast. France, for its part, has raised concerns about migrant safety and fears an escalation of tensions.

Talks have already reached ministerial level, but the two sides have so far been unable to find a compromise. British officials held intensive consultations in Paris in recent days, but no progress has been made. If the deal is not renewed, people smugglers could exploit a “window” and organise mass departures during the fine weather expected in the coming days.

In 2025, around 41,500 people crossed the Channel in small boats — the second highest figure ever recorded. Crossings have continued into 2026, though numbers fluctuate depending on weather conditions.

Keir Starmer’s government says it is pursuing “flexibility and innovation” in tackling illegal migration, including a pilot “one-for-one” mechanism under which some of those arriving by boat are returned to France in exchange for legitimate asylum seekers.

The opposition and Conservatives have already criticised the Labour cabinet for weakness at the negotiating table, warning that without a firm agreement with France, the flow of illegal migrants could increase sharply.

It remains unclear whether the two sides will be able to reach a compromise in the coming hours. The situation is developing rapidly.
