France’s 2027 Election could test NATO’s unity

NATO is increasingly concerned about the possibility of France withdrawing from the Alliance following the 2027 presidential election.

Almost half of French voters support political forces advocating either a reduced role for France within NATO or withdrawal from the Alliance altogether.

Among them is Marine Le Pen, who has called for France to withdraw from NATO’s integrated military command, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who supports France’s complete withdrawal from the Alliance.

A French withdrawal would represent a major strategic setback for NATO. France is a nuclear-armed state and one of Europe’s largest military powers, with significant conventional capabilities and a central role in European defence.
