Over the past few days, Polish border guards have registered more than 50 attempts to illegally cross the state border from Belarus — the highest figure over such a short period since the beginning of 2026.
According to the Podlasie Border Guard Division of Poland, all attempts were recorded on the section of the border guarded by the border post in Narewka. Most migrants, upon seeing Polish border guards, retreated into Belarusian territory; the rest were detained.
In total, more than 410 attempts at illegal border crossing have been recorded on this section of the border since the beginning of 2026. The Polish side reports 100% effectiveness in preventing illegal border crossings.
The sharp increase in border activity comes as Poland continues its restrictive measures. In September 2026, the Polish parliament extended for the ninth time by 60 days the suspension of the right to apply for asylum for individuals illegally crossing the border with Belarus.
In the first half of 2026, only 235 attempts at illegal border crossing were recorded — 98% fewer than in the same period of 2025 (more than 15,500 attempts). Overall, from January 1 to mid-August 2026, 377 attempts at illegal border crossing were recorded along the entire Polish-Belarusian border.
Polish authorities attribute the sharp decline in 2026 figures to stricter border security measures, while emphasising that the threat from Belarus remains.
