Ahead of the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in September 2026, the AfD, currently leading the polls, is making the dismantling of wind power a central campaign pledge—in the lee of similar demands from right-wing populists worldwide, foremost the current US administration.
Under examination is the claim that wind power is unreliable, expensive and environmentally damaging, and that gas, nuclear power and biogas would be the better alternative. The finding: measured against the available figures, the indictment does not hold up, and the proposed replacement—chiefly Russian pipeline gas—would raise prices, weaken security of supply, and deepen import dependency.
