Major UK regional elections underway

Today, Thursday 7 May, millions of British citizens are casting their votes in some of the most significant regional elections in recent years. Local elections are taking place across England, while voters in Scotland and Wales are choosing new representatives for their national parliaments.

According to the Electoral Commission, more than 30 million people are participating in the vote. In England, over 5,000 seats are up for grabs across 136 local councils (including all London boroughs, metropolitan and unitary authorities), along with six directly elected mayoral positions. Simultaneously, elections are being held for the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) and the Welsh Senedd (Senedd Cymru).

These elections serve as a crucial test for the ruling Labour Party and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, two years on from their rise to power. Polls are forecasting significant losses for Labour amid public dissatisfaction over the economic situation, immigration policy, and the general cost of living.

Attention is focused on:

The potential rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK across England;

Gains by the Liberal Democrats and the Greens in certain regions;

The battle for power in Scotland between the Scottish National Party (SNP), Labour, and the Conservatives;

The situation in Wales, where Plaid Cymru is hoping for historic gains.

Polling stations are open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm local time. The first results are expected late in the evening and into the early hours of Friday.

Voting is taking place against a backdrop of traditionally higher turnout for local and regional elections. Voters highlight the importance of issues that directly affect everyday life: council tax, housing, education, healthcare, and transport.
