NATO is considering moving away from US reconnaissance aircraft in favor of its own European platforms, according to sources within the alliance.
The discussion centers primarily on long-range radar detection and surveillance aircraft, which have traditionally been provided by the United States. Within NATO, there is a view that dependence on American capabilities limits the operational autonomy of European nations.
As part of a new strategy, the alliance plans to increase investment in joint European projects and the modernization of its existing aviation fleet. In particular, the development of programs involving France, Germany, and the United Kingdom is under discussion.
According to sources, the decision is driven by both political factors and the need to adapt to new threats while increasing the level of independence of NATO’s European wing.
No final decision has been made yet, however discussions within the alliance have intensified against the backdrop of shifts in transatlantic relations and the growth of European defence budgets.
