US President Donald Trump once again sparked a diplomatic scandal, responding in a sharp and sardonic manner to Prince Harry’s appeal for Washington to demonstrate leadership on the war in Ukraine.
Rather than addressing the substance of the criticism — that the US is failing to honor its commitments — Trump made it personal. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he effectively called the Duke of Sussex’s standing into question.
“Prince Harry? How’s he doing? Say hello to his wife,” Trump began, with unmistakable sarcasm, before turning to sharper jabs. “I’ll tell you one thing: Harry doesn’t speak for the United Kingdom, that’s for sure. I think I speak for Britain a lot more than he does.”
The remarks came in response to Prince Harry’s appearance at the Kyiv Security Forum. Speaking not as a politician but as a combat veteran, the Duke issued a pointed reminder to the US of what he called its historical obligation.
He stressed that Washington bears “a special responsibility” toward Kyiv, since it was the United States that guaranteed Ukraine’s security when the country gave up its nuclear arsenal. Prince Harry called on America to “fulfill its international treaty obligations not out of charity, but for the sake of global stability.”
Analysts note that Trump skillfully sidestepped the question of whether the US has violated its “nuclear guarantees,” choosing instead to frame the situation as a personal grievance against a member of the British royal family. The US president’s attempt to declare himself “more of a voice for Britain” than an actual member of the royal family strikes many as particularly awkward, given that Harry’s remarks in Kyiv centered on the values of democracy and sovereignty — principles that critics say Trump is increasingly inclined to undermine.
While Prince Harry was telling Kyiv that “history will ask not what we said, but what we did,” Trump offered little more than a perfunctory remark about “valuing advice” — a clear signal that he has no intention of reconsidering his policy on Ukraine.
