Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, has announced his resignation from his position as Member of Parliament for the Clacton constituency in the House of Commons. He intends to trigger a by-election in his district so that voters can once again confirm his mandate.
Farage’s decision is linked to a scandal involving an undeclared gift worth millions of pounds sterling (according to some reports, £5 million from a crypto-billionaire). The politician insists he has not broken any rules, but an investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner could lead to his temporary suspension.
“I have done nothing wrong, which is why I am resigning so that the people can decide my fate in the election,” Farage stated. He plans to run again as the Reform UK candidate in the upcoming by-election.
Farage first became a Member of Parliament in 2024, winning in Clacton by a significant margin. This came after several unsuccessful attempts in previous elections. His resignation and the new by-election will serve as an important test of Reform UK’s popularity and the politician’s own standing amid internal party and parliamentary disputes.
