As of July 13, 2026, new and stricter requirements have come into force in Sweden for foreign citizens applying for a residence permit or those who already hold one.
The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) will now conduct an expanded assessment of applicants. In addition to the traditional criminal record check, the applicant’s overall lifestyle will be considered. Specialists will examine:
Compliance with decisions of state authorities;
Presence of debts;
Truthfulness of information provided when receiving social benefits;
Possible connections with criminal or extremist organizations.
“We want to ensure that a person receiving a residence permit in Sweden respects the rules of society and does not create risks to the country’s security and well-being,” the Migration Agency stated.
Under the new rules, in certain cases, improper behavior may serve as grounds for refusing to issue a residence permit. If the document has already been issued, it may be revoked.
The new regulations are aimed at strengthening control over migrant integration and preventing abuse of social systems. The changes will affect both new applicants and those already living in the country who plan to renew their permits.
